Funding Your Tourism Efforts

In the past, and even this moment, funding mechanisms for tourism organizations happen to be nearly the same since in the past ever when someone identified that getting tourists to check out a location was good for nokia's and general economy of these area.

Subsequently, tourism organizations also have two basic ways of getting funding for that programs that they had developed to accomplish their goal of attracting more visitors, and so, money, to their area.

The 1st time tested technique tourism employed was implementing a subscription fee for area businesses. That worked well for a while, yet still actively works to some amount today. The belief that a small business is often a person in a CVB or chamber DOES helps to ensure that, to a certain degree, that business's interests will likely be cared for. The problem began when processes for attracting visitors to a area became costlier...in many instances, far more expensive...and personnel costs started increasing at the same time. CVBs and chambers all around the US needed more income than memberships fees could bring in.

So that you can continue efforts to attract tourists, CVBs and chambers looked to government for funding. First, a nearby city government and, a nearby county government lastly, the state government. At that time, it seemed like things were getting great!

Also it Really was beneficial to a little while!

I will be talking about West Virginia because We've quality knowledge of what's been happening within the mountain state for quite some time now. West Virginia is as simple as no means unique! All 49 other states inside our republic have similar funding processes...and other alike, if not worse, problems.

Though West Virginia was certainly one of only six states within the whole republic to NOT use a budget deficit, the state of hawaii government STILL finished up cutting tourism dollars by 50%! An advanced tourism professional in West Virginia, there goes Half Your financial budget!

Those same cuts are happening in every state.

So, lift your nose up from the grindstone a minute and consider this.

You can not suddenly start charging more to your memberships...the economy in your area just won't allow that to happen. If business costs are increasing...and also you KNOW they're...what else could you do to justify charging that business more to become person in your CVB or chamber? What can be their reactions if you DID raise your membership fee by 50%?

You know the solution to any particular one! You suddenly would have a lot less members. So, while using the membership funding technique to improve your funding will not work.

Now, look at the government funding technique. Do you think you're seeing increases in the amount funding your small business will get the coming year? Think about 24 months from now? Several years? You KNOW that funding levels aren't going to increase before i write again!

Likelihood is, things aren't getting better financially for virtually any state OR the republic for quite some years. BUT, odds are good that amounted to of selling and advertising in order to attract people to your community won't decrease but increase!

So, there you go. For that bulk of us, traditional funding sources are searching pretty bleak for your not too distant future. What are YOUR plans for that "lean years" which might be coming to everybody in the tourism field?

I am aware there are some out there which are saying, "Our state government will not let tourism funding decrease very much!" I just heard how the other day!

When times were good and cash was plentiful, I might have agreed with her. But times ain't good and funds just isn't plentiful anymore...a minimum of money being released. Everyone has Lots of money promised to go out every year. Money promised to Medicaid, public employees pensions, infrastructure, only to name a few that every state faces.

If you feel state budget makers will cut Medicaid, public employee pensions and infrastructure to provide tourism organizations MORE funding, then PLEASE bring me back a lollipop from Candyland whenever your visit there is certainly through!

It ain't gonna happen!

You can not raise the membership fees and you can't count on the state of hawaii to provide you with more funding Though the new programs...heck, the same old programs you have now...are common costing a lot more continuously.

So, what exactly are you gonna do? Just hide your brain and hope that your particular organization causes it to be through this difficult time? Function the minimum your organization are able to afford and hope that visitors arrive for a area anyway?

Here's probably a more meaningful question: Does one think that the techniques your company is utilizing right now or offers to use in your immediate future are worthwhile and WORTH the money you're investing in them?

If you think maybe the strategy you use or want to use are perfect, worthwhile and may work for your location, how are things gonna spend on them? This is the big issue! How are things gonna pay for them?

Here's a novel idea: rather than going to your geographic area businesses and begging for more money in membership fees OR visiting your local government with hat at hand begging for more funding, how 'bout your company EARNS the amount of money?

"We generate income the old fashioned way, we EARN it!"

Now, That's not me speaking about fund raisers, banquets, bake sales or selling cookies! You're here you are at do all that whenever you want.

Here's another: who locally...if you do not have Microsoft or Apple or Google in your area...knows a little more about effective standby time with the Internet than you or your staff? You have Online marketing techniques everyday and quite effectively!

So, why aren't you offering Web based services to businesses in the area for their fee? You know their problems and what they need...they let you know that each time the truth is them. Who safer to do "Internet stuff" for them?

I am not speaking about building websites or hosting websites for the children. Those services require a lots of specific training and specific equipment/programs to do correctly. PLUS, the gain online on a website is just too far in the future being of any immediate assistance to business people in your town.

Come on, man technologies which will show your small business owners a nearly IMMEDIATE, NOTICEABLE profit! AND, at a price that's HIGHLY affordable for just about any business!
